Uosu
A moment to unwind in the city.
A closer look at Japanese restaurant Uosu in Nagaokakyo, Kyoto, renowned for its signature takenoko sugatazushi—tender bamboo shoots simmered in dashi and scented with yuzu and kinome—alongside seasonal meal sets and takeout offerings.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When visiting Uosu in Nagaokakyo, the first dish to seek out is its celebrated specialty, takenoko sugatazushi. Bamboo shoots simmered slowly with bonito flakes, sake, and mirin achieve an appealing tenderness, then are stuffed with sushi rice elegantly perfumed with yuzu citrus and aromatic kinome herb leaves. The savory depth of the dashi broth spreads gently across the palate, balanced by a brisk citrus lift on the finish. It stands out equally well as an à la carte order or as the closing highlight of a multi-course set.
Beyond the whole bamboo shoot sushi, the dining room serves a wide spectrum of traditional fare, from dashi-rich chawanmushi steamed egg custard and fluffy rolled dashimaki tamago omelets to lunchtime set meals and hexagonal bento boxes. Trays often pair sashimi, tempura, and seasonal small side dishes, while the evening menu expands to include sukiyaki and shabu-shabu banquet courses, offering authentic Japanese flavors suited to diverse occasions.
The spacious interior features table seating as well as private dining rooms, making it a comfortable destination for casual lunches, family gatherings, and larger private events alike. On the 1st floor, the restaurant offers takenoko sugatazushi and prepared side dishes to go, making it convenient to pick up a culinary souvenir and take the dining experience home.
